2031 ജനുവരി 31ഓടെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ബഹിരാകാശ നിലയം(ഐ.എസ്. എസ്) തകര്‍ത്ത് പസഫിക് സമുദ്രത്തിലെ പോയിന്റ് നെമോയില്‍ തള്ളുമെന്ന് യു.എസ് ബഹിരാകാശ ഏജന്‍സി നാസ. ബഹിരാകാശ വാഹനങ്ങളുടെ ശവപ്പറമ്പെന്ന പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ പ്രദേശം ജനവാസ കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍നിന്ന് ഏറെ അകലെയാണെന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് നിലയം ഇവിടെ ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുന്നത്.
റഷ്യയുടെ റോസ്‌കോമോസ്, യൂറോപ്യന്‍ യൂണിയന്റെ എ.ഇസ്.എ, ജപ്പാന്റെ ജാക്‌സ എന്നീ ബഹിരാകാശ ഏജന്‍സികളെല്ലാം ഉപയോഗ ശൂന്യമായ റോക്കറ്റുകളും ബഹിരാകാശ വാഹനങ്ങളും തള്ളുന്നത് ഇവിടെയാണ്. ഏറ്റവുമൊടുവില്‍ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ബഹിരാകാശ നിലയത്തേയും ഇവിടെ അടക്കം ചെയ്യാനാണ് നാസയുടെ പദ്ധതി. 1998ല്‍ വിക്ഷേപിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നിലയത്തിന് നാസ ആയുസ്സ് നിശ്ചയിച്ചിരുന്നത് 15 വര്‍ഷമാണ്. ബഹിരാകാശ ഗവേഷണ മേഖലക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ നിരവധി സംഭാവനകള്‍ നല്‍കിയ നിലയത്തിന്റെ കാലാവധി പിന്നീട് നീട്ടിക്കൊടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം അവസാനിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നിലയത്തിന് മുപ്പത് വയസ്സാകും. അമേരിക്കയും റഷ്യയും യൂറോപ്യന്‍ സ്‌പേസ് ഏജന്‍സിയും സഹകരിച്ചാണ് നിലയം മുന്നോട്ടുകൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്.
NASA plans to retire the International Space Station by 2031 by crashing it into the Pacific Ocean
Nasa plans to retire the Internation Space Station (ISS) by crashing it into the Pacific Ocean in 2031.
The more than 20-year-old ISS will continue to operate till the end of 2030, after which it would come down into a watery grave.
This week Nasa announced the ISS’s plans for the next decade as the agency undergoes a transition of operations to commercial services.
Launched in 2000, the space lab has spent 8476 days and counting in orbit, 227 nautical miles above the Earth. Home to over 200 astronauts from 19 different countries, the ISS allowed for continuous human presence in space for over two decades.
