സമുദ്ര നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾക്കായി നിരവധി ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങൾ പരിഗണനയിലുണ്ട്. കടൽ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയെയും ജീവജാലങ്ങളെയും കൂടുതൽ കൃത്യതയോടെ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ ഇത് ഉപകരിക്കും. ഐഎസ്ആർഒ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ബഹിരാകാശ ഗവേഷണത്തിന് നേതൃത്വം നൽകിയത് പോലെ, സമുദ്ര ഗവേഷണത്തിൽ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വൈദഗ്ദ്ധ്യം ഏകീകരിക്കുന്നതിന് ഒരു സംയോജിത പ്ലാറ്റ്‌ഫോം ആവശ്യമാണ്- ഡോ. സോമനാഥ് പറഞ്ഞു.ഹൈപ്പർസ്‌പെക്ട്രൽ സെൻസറുകളും ഡാറ്റാ സംയോജനവും വേണം.
നിലവിൽ സമുദ്ര നിരീക്ഷണത്തിന് ഹൈപ്പർസ്‌പെക്ട്രൽ സെൻസറുകളുടെ കുറവുണ്ട്. ഇത് ഭാവിയിലെ സമുദ്ര നിരീക്ഷണത്തിനും മാപ്പിംഗിനും നിർണായകമാണ്. തത്സമയ വിവരശേഖരണവും നിരീക്ഷണ പരിധിയും മെച്ചപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതിനായി ബോയികളുടെയും ആളില്ലാ വ്യോമ വാഹനങ്ങളുടെയും വിന്യാസം വർദ്ധിപ്പിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെ ആഴങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് ഡേറ്റ ശേഖരിക്കാൻ കഴിവുള്ള ആഴക്കടൽ സെൻസറുകൾ രാജ്യത്തിന് ആവശ്യമാണ്. നിർമിത ബുദ്ധി സമുദ്ര ഡേറ്റ സംവിധാനങ്ങളുമായി സംയോജിപ്പിച്ച് വിശകലനം, പ്രവചന മാതൃകകൾ എന്നിവക്കായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.

സിഎംഎഫ്ആർഐയിലെ മുൻ പ്രിൻസിപ്പൽ സയന്റിസ്റ്റും മാരികൾച്ചർ ഡിവിഷൻ മേധാവിയുമായിരുന്നു ഡോ. ഗോപകുമാർ. മോദ, വളവോടി വറ്റ എന്നീ മീനുകളുടെ കൃത്രിമ വിത്തുൽപാദന സാങ്കേതികവിദ്യ വികസിപ്പിച്ചത് അദ്ദേഹമാണ്. ഇതോടെയാണ് കൂടുമത്സ്യകൃഷിക്ക് ഇന്ത്യയിൽ കൂടുതൽ പ്രചാരം കൈവന്നത്. തീരദേശ സമൂഹങ്ങളെ ശാക്തീകരിക്കുന്നതിൽ ഇത് നിർണായകമായെന്ന് പുരസ്‌കാര സമിത വിലയിരുത്തി.

ബംഗാൾ ഉൾക്കടൽ അതിർത്തി പങ്കിടുന്ന രാജ്യങ്ങൾ തമ്മിൽ ഗവേഷണ സഹകരണം അനിവാര്യമാണെന്ന് ബിംസ്‌ടെക് ഇന്ത്യ മറൈൻ റിസർച്ച് നെറ്റ് വർകിന്റെ (ബിംറെൻ) ആദ്യ പങ്കാളിത്ത സംഗമം അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. മീകോസ് 4നോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ച് നടത്തിയ സംഗമത്തിലാണ് നിർദേശം.
പൊതുവായ വെല്ലുവിളികളെ കൂട്ടായി നേരിടുന്നതിനും മേഖലയുടെ സുസ്ഥിര വളർച്ചയും സമൃദ്ധിയും പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനും ഈ സഹകരണം അത്യാവശ്യമാണെന്ന് സംഗമം വിലയിരുത്തി.

ഇന്ത്യയാണ് ഈ സംരംഭത്തിന് തുടക്കമിട്ടത്. ബിംസ്‌ടെക് അംഗരാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞർ, നയതന്ത്ര വിദഗ്ദ്ധർ, സ്ഥാപനങ്ങൾ എന്നിവരെ ഒരുമിച്ച് കൊണ്ടുവരാനും, അറിവ് കൈമാറ്റം ചെയ്യാനും, പൊതുവായ പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങൾക്ക് സംയുക്തമായി പരിഹാരം കാണാനും സഹായിക്കുന്ന സവിശേഷ വേദിയാണിതെന്ന് വിദേശകാര്യ മന്ത്രാലയം ജോയിന്റ് സെക്രട്ടറി സി.എസ്.ആർ. റാം പറഞ്ഞു.

konnivartha.com; Embedding space-based oceanography into the marine research ecosystem is for harnessing the potential of the blue economy and the well-being of the coastal fishing communities, Dr S Somanath, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has said. India should embark on a mission to conquer the oceans through technology, innovation, data integration and coordinated research, he added.A series of satellites is under consideration for ocean-related observation, which would mark a new era in understanding marine ecosystems and resources. “Just as ISRO led India’s space journey, an integrative platform for ocean exploration is needed to unite the nation’s expertise in marine science”, Dr Somanath said.
“Currently, we lack hyperspectral sensors in ocean observation, which are critical for future ocean monitoring and resource mapping. Enhanced deployment of buoys and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is required to improve the real-time data collection and observation coverage. The country needs deep-sea sensors capable of collecting data from ocean depths”, the former ISRO chief said.
Highlighting the role of technology in marine science, he stressed the need for integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into ocean data systems to enhance analysis, prediction models, and decision-making in resource management. “Data integration is essential for sustainable ocean governance”, he said, adding that technology-driven enterprises are crucial for harnessing marine resources responsibly while contributing to the blue economy.
Dr J K Jena, Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) presided over the function.Speaking on the occasion, C S R Ram, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs said that maritime cooperation is India’s topmost priority. “This is crucial for securing maritime security, robust trade, enhanced connectivity and realising the potential of the blue economy”, he said.
Marine Scientist Dr. G. Gopakumar Honoured with Dr. S. Jones Memorial Award at MECOS-4
The Marine Biological Association of India (MBAI) on Tuesday conferred the prestigious Fourth Dr. S. Jones Memorial Award upon renowned marine scientist, Dr. G. Gopakumar, recognising his monumental contributions to mariculture and marine fisheries over four decades.
The award, which carries a cash prize and a citation, was presented during the inaugural ceremony of the MECOS-4 at CMFRI.
Dr. Gopakumar, former Principal Scientist and Head of the Mariculture Division at CMFRI, was widely acclaimed as one of the most influential pioneers in advancing India’s mariculture sector. His work in the breeding of cobia and silver pompano led to the widespread adoption of cage fish farming, significantly contributing to the empowerment of coastal communities and the growth of sustainable livelihoods.
Dr P Krishnan, Director of Bay of Bengal Intergovernmental Organisation (BOBP); Dr Cherdsak Virapat, Regional Director for Asia, TIEMS, Thailand; Dr Bijay Kumar Behra, Chief Executive of National Fisheries Development Board; Dodda Venkata Swamy, Chairman of Marine Products Export Development Authority, Dr A Gopalakrishnan, former Director of CMFRI and Dr Grinson George, Director of CMFRI spoke at the inauguration of the MECOS 4.
Octopus Delicacies Draw Crowds at MECOS Seafood Festival
Kochi: Octopus delicacies are drawing crowds at the seafood festival held in connection with the fourth International Marine Symposium, MECOS 4.
The fest features a diverse array of octopus preparations, including octopus momo and octopus roast, showcasing the versatility of this marine ingredient. The seafood festival caters to all palates with a wide range of popular marine fare. Preparations of mussels, prawns, squids and fish are available at the fest.
In addition, visitors can enjoy speciality items such as different types of snacks made with fish, the elaborate Sagara Sadya (a seafood feast), and the traditional Stuffed Mussels (Kallumakkaya Niranjahtu).
The MECOS seafood festival is open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
‘Regional Research Collaboration Vital for Bay of Bengal countries’
The First Regional Partners Conclave of the BIMSTEC India Marine Research Network (BIMReN) has called for stronger collaboration among the regional research communities of Bay of Bengal countries to collectively address common challenges and promote sustainable growth and prosperity in the region. The meeting was held on the sideline of the MECOS 4 at CMFRI on Tuesday. BIMReN is a joint initiative by the Ministry of External Affairs and the Bay of Bengal Programme- Intern Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO).
C S R Ram, Joint Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs said the initiative, launched by the Government of India, is a unique platform that brings together scientists, policy experts and institutions from member countries to exchange knowledge and jointly develop solutions to shared issues.
He said that the Prime Minister’s Office directly monitors the progress of BIMReN projects, underlining their national and regional importance. “Our regional research community must come together to deal with common challenges for the growth and prosperity of the region. The contributions from ongoing research projects will significantly strengthen policy decisions across the Bay region,” he said.
