
konnivartha.com: Post offices are no longer about post cards and stamps, they have also developed into payment banks, savings banks and rural livelihood missions, said Union Minister of State for Communications, Dr. Chanda Sekhar Pemmasani, while inaugurating the newly constructed Varkala Sub Post Office buliding today. The Minister also added that despite the decline faced by Department of Posts in the era of mobile phones, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has envisioned how to convert post offices.
Mentioning the central government’s attempt to transform India Post into a global logistic entity, Dr. Pemmasani said that entrepreneurs who wants to export their products, can do it seamlessly through Post offices now, even in rural villages. Just like any other private organisation, India Post has now hired a CTO, Chief Technology Officer, to enhance its efficiency.
He further stated that Department of Posts is planning to conduct the largest survey in the entire country. Representatives from the department will visit more than 30 lakh households, to explain about services and the schemes for each family. Union Minister also announced that India Post will soon release a stamp to commemorate the 100th year of meeting between Sree Narayana Guru and Mahatma Gandhi.
In the event, Dr. Pemmasani dedicated the new Varkala Sub Post Office building to the nation and unveiled the plaque in the new building. The Minister had an office walkthrough following the unveiling. The Union Minister also handed over passbooks for Sukanya Samrudhi Yojana, Senior Citizen’s Savings Account and other schemes by India Post.

V Joy, MLA, Varkala, Shri Nithin Nair V, Councillor, Varkala Constituency and Shri K M Laji, Chairman, Varkala Constituency delivered felicitation address. Shri J T Venkateswarlu IPoS, Chief Postmaster General, Kerala Circle and Shri Rahul R IPoS, SSPOs, TVM North Division also spoke at the event.
